The Symptoms that indicate future Kidney Damage

Kidneys are small-sized and bean shaped organs of the body that filter the body's blood to eliminate waste and toxins through urine. Kidneys become incapable to properly process the waste of the body when they fail or damaged. Due to certain conditions in the body, kidney disease takes place and makes them ineffective to perform their vital functions such as blood pressure regulation, toxic waste removal, production of red blood cells and maintaining the levels of essential nutrients like calcium, sodium, potassium, and phosphorous. Nowadays, many people suffer from chronic kidney disease but they don't know it as they are unknown to the early signs and symptoms of the kidney disease.

The Symptoms that indicate future Kidney Damage

Knowledge is the power for people who are at risk of kidney disease and also for those who have kidney disease. Many years can be taken by the kidney to go from the chronic kidney disease to the kidney damage. There are many people in the world having chronic kidney disease and live out their lives without ever getting kidney damage. Knowledge about the signs and symptoms of the kidney disease that indicate future kidney damage can help you to get the best treatment and thus to avoid kidney damage in future. You may have one or more of the following symptoms of kidney disease but keep in mind that many of the symptoms can be attributable to reasons other than kidney disease. The only way to know about the cause of your symptoms is to consult your doctor for blood and urine tests.

Symptoms Indicating Future Kidney Damage

High Blood Pressure
Regulation of blood pressure is one of the kidney's important functions. Blood vessels and arteries get damaged with high blood pressure and when damage occurs to the arteries and blood vessels of the kidney, removal of the excess sodium and fluids is not done properly by the kidneys. When the sodium and fluids builds up in excess, blood pressure is increased even more and causes further damage to the kidneys. So if you have a high blood pressure, then consult your doctor to protect yourself from possible kidney damage.

Changes in Urination
Urine is produced in the kidney so when the kidney disease take place, changes in urination also occur and it is the one of the earliest symptoms of kidney disease. The symptoms include:
  • Need to urinate more frequently, including waking up at night to urinate
  • Urinating less often or in smaller amounts than normal with dark colored urine
  • Having difficulty in urinating or low output of urine when you still feel pressure
  • Urinating more often or in greater amounts than normal, with pale colored urine
  • Foam or bubble in urine
  • Blood in urine

Swelling or Inflammation
Maybe you have swelling in parts of the body as a sign of kidney disease. Swelling occurs due to other conditions as well. Facial swelling and swelling in the ankles and feet or puffy eyes upon awakening are the types of the swelling. Kidneys cannot effectively remove toxins and excess fluids when they are under stress. When toxins amount is raised in the body, swelling takes place as a result of body’s attempt to defend itself from these toxins. Consult to your doctor when you find yourself becoming more susceptible to swelling or inflammation in your body.

Feeling tired or Fatigue
During normal functioning, kidney produces a hormone named "erythropoietin", which helps in the production of the oxygen-carrying red blood cells. If the kidneys are diseased, they produce less erythropoietin and so the fewer numbers of red blood cells, lead to reduced oxygen flow throughout the body. In this condition, you become tired very quickly due to loss of energy.

Shortness of Breath
As swelling is one of the symptoms of the kidney disease, it can also take place in the lungs and build up of extra fluid in the lung can cause shortness of breath. Deficiency of oxygen-carrying red blood cells can leave human body oxygen-starved and so shortness of breath.

Vomiting or Nausea
Vomiting or nausea can be caused by the severe buildup of wastes in the blood (uremia). It may result in the poor intake of food and the development of malnutrition. Loss of appetite can also cause weight loss.

Ammonia Breath or Bad Breath in Mouth
Bad breath or ammonia breath can be caused by the buildup of wastes in the blood as they change the taste of food. Some people have also noticed that they stop liking to consume meat or they are losing weight due to reduced appetite.

Itchy and dry skin
To remove waste material from the blood is the main function of the kidney. When the kidneys fail to do this, the waste materials buildup in blood and can cause severe itching or dry skin.

Other Symptoms include:
  • Excess protein in your urine
  • Higher cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Abnormal heart rhythms.

These symptoms can only be identified by the clinical screening of the blood and urine.
