Dangers of Bikini Waxing

Bikini waxing is a popular fashion trend among all women regardless of age. In fact, nowadays more and more women are opting for bikini waxing without realizing the potential risks involved with this beauty procedure. The dangers of bikini waxing can range from a minor reaction like slight irritation or redness, to severe life-threatening bacterial infections. Now, if you are planning a bikini wax, then it’s highly recommended to go through its consequences mentioned below. This will make you realize that bikini waxing can truly put yourself at risk for several health dangers.

Dangers of Bikini Waxing
Infections

The pubic hair is meant to protect the mucous membranes and sensitive skin in the genital region from various types of infections. In bikini waxing, this natural layer of protection is literally stripped away along with the hair. Plus, waxing results in pulling off tiny pieces of the outer skin layer, which eventually opens up the door for dangerous bacteria to enter. Moreover, compared to other body parts, pubic region has a greater number of bacteria that can infect and cause severe problems. It has been found that some bikini waxed women have got affected with Cellulitis, which is a bacterial infection that can cause extreme pain, fever & swelling, and if left untreated it could even result in lower limb amputation or death. What’s even worse is that these infections could even spread to others via direct contact or sharing towels.

In addition, if your waxing treatment involves using sticks then make sure that the practitioners don’t re-dip those sticks. Because if sticks used on tainted skin are put back into the pot of wax, then there are chances that an infection would be transferred to other areas of skin as well, for example - face or underarms.

STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)

Several studies have suggested that women who have been through bikini wax are more likely to suffer from various sexually transmitted infections. Waxing can indeed raise the risk of contracting the dangerous virus called Molluscum contagiosum, which can cause a mild skin rash in a person. As the name suggests, this skin disorder is contagious and it can be easily transferred from one person to another. Certainly, Molluscum contagiosum is not the only sexually transmitted infection that waxing can cause. Actually, any infection that needs contact to spread will be easily contracted, and so people who go through bikini wax may contract some dangerous skin trauma diseases like HPV (genital warts and cervical cancer), herpes, HIV, etc.

Burns

Bikini waxing can even cause some serious burns if the wax is overly heated. It is very important to heat the wax to its suggested temperature. If you apply some lotions, oils or creams containing retinoid on any part of your body like legs, face or arms, then your skin will become more susceptible to get burned or peeled off while waxing. This is because such creams or lotions can loosen the attachment of skin cells, which in turn can result in increased exfoliation. Moreover, this can also lead to scarring. And if your skin gets irritated repetitively then it could cause chronic irritation and scarring as well.

Infected ingrown hairs

When a hair is pulled out from its root, a new hair which is much smaller and thinner will start to grow in its place. Naturally, this baby hair has less strength. Now, since the new hair’s tip is tremendously weak, this hair often finds it difficult to get its way out of the surface. Instead, it would get trapped under the surface forming an irritated bump that can become highly infected. This common side effect of bikini waxing can often result in inflammation of the area and severe pain.
